Jargon Buster "ZIF"

 

ZIF - Zero Insertion Force

A type of chip socket which does not require force to place a chip into it. Usually has a lever or screw which allows the chip to be removed, then when a new chip is place in, to be locked down into place.

Often used in computer systems to allow the CPU to be easily replaced or upgraded.
