Light Computers becomes one of the Inner City 100 Winners

Top 100 Reasons for Doing Business in the Inner City - First Annual Inner City 100

30 November 2001

London …A £7.6 million international exhibition services and contracting firm, a £6.5 million Internet publisher, and a £3.1 million high-quality clothing manufacturer. Each of them growing rapidly over the past five years. Do they sound like businesses you would expect to find in the UK’s most distressed urban areas?

Would you be surprised to learn that a significant number of these companies have experienced over 500% turnover growth during the past five years?

The New Economics Foundation (NEF), a leading think-tank on neighbourhood renewal and enterprise led regeneration, celebrated this display of urban entrepreneurship with the announcement of the first annual
Inner City 100, a national listing of 100 fast-growing companies located exclusively in the UK’s inner cities. The winners were announced at an Awards Ceremony held at the Science Museum in London. Presenting the awards were the Rt. Honourable Gordon Brown, Executive Director of the New Economics Foundation Ed Mayo and Group Chief Executive of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Fred Goodwin.

"More than merely a list, the Inner City 100 is the most ambitious project to uncover business successes in the UK’s inner cities. Located in some of the most economically and socially distressed urban areas, the Inner City 100 entrepreneurs demonstrate that the inner city offers a compelling opportunity to build and grow businesses," stated Mayo. "They are creating thousands of jobs for inner city residents. Many of their employees live in the inner city. They are paying decent wages and are providing an enormous engine of positive energy to their communities."

Launched by the Chancellor in February 2001, the Inner City 100 is an important part of the government’s drive to open up enterprise to all through celebrating and showcasing the top 100 business successes in our most challenged inner cities. The programme is backed by The Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest.

Right Honourable Gordon Brown Chancellor of the Exchequer said. "We must do away with the old urban myth that our inner cities are areas characterised by social problems and economic blight for businesses to shun, but instead see these areas as places of untapped potential, where there are young people with dynamism looking for work and markets waiting to develop and grow.

"Inner City 100, which I was delighted to launch earlier this year, shows that even the most disadvantaged inner cites are not the enterprise ‘no-go’ areas of the past, but the investment opportunities of the future.

"I want to send a message to every business and every would-be business man or woman in our inner city areas: if you are starting up, hiring for the first time, growing and looking for capital – we are on your side, whatever your trade, whatever your region, whatever your ambitions."

The Inner City 100 companies are an especially impressive group. The companies defy stereotypes of unsophisticated inner-city operations:, average five-year sales growth rate from 1996 to 2000 is 274 percent, and average annual turnover for 2000 is £ 5 million. The Inner City 100 are responsible for creating close to 3,500 jobs and more than doubling their employment over the past five years.

Fred Goodwin, Group Chief Executive of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, the lead sponsor of the Inner City 100, said, " The Inner City 100 Index provides concrete evidence to contradict anyone who doubts the entrepreneurial spirit and business opportunities in our inner cities. We have been greatly encouraged by the quality, size and ambition of the companies in the Index and the contribution they are making to employment, their local economy and the inner city environment.

"We congratulate this year’s winners and trust that their achievements will inspire many others and we can look forward to many more nominations next year."

Alongside the launch of the Index, the New Economics Foundation is publishing the Competitive Inner City, an in-depth research and policy review. This will assess the opportunities for enterprise-led renewal in inner city areas and how to nurture a culture of enterprise supporting young, innovative, independent companies.

The Inner City 100 received over 300 nominations. To qualify, the company had to operate inside eligible postcodes in the fifteen cities (see 3 below) and:

  • be independent (no other company holds a major share except venture capital).
  • have a turnover of more than £25,000 in 1996 and £300,000 in 2000.
  • have created jobs between these years and employed at least five people in 2000.
  • act in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Businesses could either nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else such as non-governmental organisations, business associations, banks, local authorities, voluntary organisations, Regional Development Agencies and the Small Business Service.

Apart from The Royal Bank of Scotland and Natwest, other partners for the Inner City 100 index include HM Treasury, the Small Business Service, the London Business School, the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, the Bank of England, the seven regional development agencies, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, Merseyside Special Investment Fund, The Prince’s Trust, Apax Partners Ltd and Business in the Community.

About the Inner City 100

The Inner City 100 is modeled on the ICIC-Inc. Magazine Inner City 100, which was established by Michael Porter, a Harvard Business Professor in Boston, USA. The project is administered by Inc. magazine and the Initiative for the Competitive Inner City with whom the New Economics Foundation are now twinned.
